CV vs Resume (Global Differences)

The Basics

"CV" stands for Curriculum Vitae (Latin for "course of life"). "Resume" comes from French, meaning "summary." In practice, the terms refer to different document types in different countries. Getting this wrong can cost you the job.

Country-by-Country Guide

Here is what to use in each major market.

United States & Canada

Use a RESUME. One page (maximum two for senior roles). No photo, no personal details, American English. Focus on achievements with metrics.

United Kingdom & Ireland

Use a CV. Two pages is standard. British English, no photo, includes a personal statement. Reverse-chronological format.

Europe (Germany, France, Netherlands)

Use a CV or Lebenslauf (Germany). Often includes a professional photo. May be longer than UK CVs. Some countries expect handwritten cover letters (increasingly rare).

Middle East (UAE, Saudi Arabia)

Use a CV. Two to three pages. Include photo, nationality, visa status, date of birth. Arabic language skills should be highlighted.

Asia (India, Singapore, Philippines)

Use a CV. Two pages. Include personal details. Strong emphasis on educational qualifications and certifications.

Africa (Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya)

Use a CV. Two pages. Include personal statement. Professional references often expected.

Academic CV

In academia worldwide, a CV can be multiple pages and includes publications, research, grants, teaching experience, and conference presentations. This is the one context where longer is better.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which should I use — CV or resume?

It depends on the country. In the US and Canada, use a resume (1 page). In the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, use a CV (2 pages). In academia worldwide, use a full CV.

Can I use my UK CV for US jobs?

Not without modification. A UK CV needs to be reformatted to a US resume — shorter, one page, American English, and no personal details.
